FLAGSHIP REPORT
The Ecosystem Report
South Africa’s business ecosystem is fragmented. Government, private sector, the informal economy, academia, and civil society all operate in silos. Until someone maps the full picture and makes it visible, the ecosystem cannot move forward together.
That is what the Ecosystem Report exists to do. Published annually. Built on primary research. Driven by the belief that unity starts with understanding.

The power of a unified vision.
South Africa has every ingredient for a thriving entrepreneurial economy. The talent, the markets, the demand, the capital. But it also has one of the most fractured business ecosystems in the world. Incubators do not talk to funders. Funders do not understand township markets. Corporates run CSR programmes that never reach the entrepreneurs who need them. Government builds support structures that nobody knows how to access.
The Ecosystem Report exists because we believe the first step toward fixing this is making the full picture visible. When founders, investors, policymakers, and ecosystem builders can all see the same landscape, they can begin to act together instead of in parallel.
2025 EDITION
The 2025 State of the South African Business Ecosystem
40+ pages · 6 chapters · Free download
The inaugural edition. Our most comprehensive view of what it looks like to build a business in South Africa right now. Six chapters mapping the structural, regulatory, social, and economic forces that shape the ecosystem, and the fractures between them.
1. Historical and Structural Influences
How past policies and the dual economy continue to shape market dynamics and create invisible barriers to entry.
2. Regulatory and Economic Environment
BBBEE, market entry hurdles, funding gaps in the informal sector and among SMEs, and ROI trends that reveal where capital is actually flowing.
3. Corporate Governance and Ethics
CSR, ethical leadership, shareholder structures, and stewardship. How governance creates (or undermines) long term ecosystem stability.
4. Social and Cultural Dynamics
Gender based barriers, community trust, mentorship networks, and the cultural forces that shape how collaboration does and does not happen.
5. Ecosystem Diversity and Inclusion
Migrant entrepreneurs, foreign owned businesses, geographic resource distribution, and what it takes to integrate communities that the ecosystem has historically left out.
6. Innovation and Technology
Fintech, healthtech, edtech, and the digital forces reshaping South African markets. Remote work, data infrastructure, and where disruption is real versus aspirational.

2026 EDITION
The 2026 edition is in production.
The 2025 report mapped the landscape. The 2026 edition goes deeper. We are expanding our research scope, increasing our interview base, and building on the frameworks established in the inaugural edition to track how the ecosystem is evolving, where the fractures are widening, and where new connections are forming.
The report is built on participation. The more voices we include, the more complete the picture becomes. If you are a founder, investor, ecosystem builder, employer, or business leader operating in South Africa, your perspective is part of the story we are trying to tell.

Participation takes about 5-10 minutes. You complete a structured survey covering your experience operating within the South African business ecosystem: what is working, what is not, and where you see the biggest opportunities and barriers.
